British beef is back on the American market

The first batch of British beef shipped to the US this week by the Foyle Food Group is the first in 22 years since the US banned European beef due to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) problems.

Recently, the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) of the USDA named four UK businesses that have received the right to export beef to the US market. In addition to Foyle Food Group, Kepak Group, WD Meats and Granville Food Care have gained access to the US market and beef shipments are expected to increase in the coming weeks.

“Our beef is known as one of the best in the world for its high quality, safety and animal welfare standards, and this landmark milestone means more people around the world can enjoy our product,” said UK Environment Minister George Eustis, commented on the resumption of exports.
In March 2020, the US, after a three-week inspection, agreed on equivalence of standards for disease control measures in the UK and US. America began to gradually open up its market for beef exports from the European Union, starting in Ireland in 2015.

Phil Hadley, director of international market development for AHDB, said the United States is an important potential market for red meat exports. “The resumption of exports will give a fantastic boost to the sector, and we look forward to seeing more of our red meat on US dinner tables in the coming months and years,” he said.
