While farmers now require a veterinarian’s prescription to purchase antibiotics, there is little evidence that antibiotics can help prevent disease. Its use is still justified, so sales haven’t declined that much. In fact, according to unpublished records from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, some beef suppliers have taken a perceived “first priority and very important” drug, the most powerful drug used to treat bacterial infections.
The use of antibiotics (HP-CIA) is in alarming excess. The data suggests that McDonald’s beef supplier uses at least five types of the HP-CIA, while the various suppliers of Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Walmart, and Kroger use around seven types.
The concern is that antibiotics will become ineffective after being overused. As a result, if we do get sick, this can have dire consequences for consumers. The CDC estimates that nearly 3 million infections linked to antibiotic resistance occur each year in the United States and 35,000 people have died. The latest findings, the HP-CIA of beef served by popular fast food chains and retailers, should not be taken lightly.
