Uruguayan Beef Exports Down 17.7% YTD
From January to September 2020, Uruguay exported 294.2 thousand tons of beef, which is 17.7% less than in 2019, Eurocarne reports, citing data from the National Meat Institute (INAC)
The decrease in supply volumes is due to a sharp drop in demand in China, which purchased products from Uruguay by 35.8% less than in 2019.
A drop in the volume of purchases is also noted in the European market (a decrease by 13.3%, to 30.1 thousand tons) and in Chile (by 47.1%, to 1.5 thousand tons). One of the main reasons is the restrictions on the work of the restaurant and hotel business in these countries.
In these conditions, Uruguayan suppliers have relied on the North American market. In particular, beef supplies to the United States increased by 22.4%, to 62.3 thousand tons.
At the same time, experts note a decrease in prices for exported products. According to INAC, the average price per ton of exported beef has dropped by more than $ 100 compared to 2019.
In general, for the period from January to September 2020, the supply of Uruguayan beef, excluding by-products, is estimated at $ 1.1 billion, which is 16.4% less than in 2019.
In positive news for Uruguayan farmers, mutton sales rose 6.5%. The growth was due to the Chinese market, which bought 24.2% more Uruguayan meat than in the same period last year.
